On January 5, 2011, Kevin was sworn in to serve his first term as part of the 112th Congress. During his tenure in Congress, he has served on the House Appropriations Committee, which is responsible for allocating federal spending. Since taking office, he has consistently focused on balancing the federal budget, reducing the national debt and supporting policies that stimulate private sector job growth. He now serves as Chairman of the influential Homeland Security Subcommittee, responsible for making sure our taxpayer dollars go towards keeping America safe. He previously served as the Chairman of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee, responsible for keeping congressional budgets tighter and smaller than what they were under Speaker Nancy Pelosi before Republicans won the House majority in 2010.

In addition to authoring the bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, Kevin has authored the legislation that bans congressional pay increases. He’s also authored the Email Privacy Act, legislation that requires the government to get a warrant before searching your emails or text messages, which has twice passed the House of Representatives unanimously. He’s also the lead sponsor of the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act and the Promoting Affordable Childcare for Everyone Act, two bills with broad bipartisan support.

Kevin has received several accolades and awards during his time in office. Some of the organizations include the Save Our Children Action Network, the National Head Start Association, the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Down Syndrome Society, the American Conservative Union, and others. He was also recognized by Consensus, a local organization promoting civility in public affairs, as a recipient of the 2012 Consensus Civility Award along with U.S Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO). Kevin is also a strong advocate for Kansas farmers and was recognized as a “Friend of the Farm Bureau” and was awarded the “Friend of Wheat Award” by the National Association of Wheat Growers.

Kevin lives in Overland Park with his wife Brooke and their two daughters.
